There are few studios out there on top of their respective games like Mimimi is. From Shadow tactics to Desperadoes 3they’ve proven themselves to be the master of the modern stealth tactics game, and in 2023 they’re back with a brand new game, this time about pirates.
This is Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, which will be published towards the end of the year. It doesn’t take long in the trailers below to see some familiar sights: the mix of real-time action combined with stealth tactics and special powers is one Mimimi has perfected over the last decade, and after tinkering with some magic in their last game, they are fully committed to it now.
Here’s the game’s reveal trailer:
And more helpfully, here’s the game’s debut gameplay trailer:
Apart from the obvious thematic shift, from one colorful story to another, all this will look like very known to fans of Shadow tactics and Desperadoes 3. Which, let’s be clear, is a very good thing. These two games have come as close as games can come to perfecting a genre, then Shadow Gambit will tinker with things at the edges of the Mimimi experience, not make wholesale changes.
Shadow Gambit will be released in late 2023 on PC, Xbox and PlayStation. And if you think I’ve been more hyperbolic than usual in talking about these games, know that I have a good reason. Here’s how I unpacked my impressions Desperadoes 3:
I can’t speak highly enough of Desperados 3. It’s almost the perfect stealth experience, tense but not scary, empowering but not easy (it actually gets really hard in parts) and if it’s the pedigree that Mimimi is building for himself in this space, I can’t wait to see what comes next.
