Nine-time Wimbledon champion Martina Navratilova said she was “very disappointed” to see Rafael Nadal withdraw from Wimbledon. On Wednesday, Nadal requested a medical timeout for an abdominal injury, but was able to continue and finish his match against Taylor Fritz.
After beating Fritz in five sets, Nadal admitted that he might be forced to withdraw from the rest of the tournament. On Thursday, Nadal underwent scans that revealed an abdominal tear. Nadal then called a press conference to announce his withdrawal from his Wimbledon semifinal against Nick Kyrgios.
“So disappointed in Rafael Nadal-shame his body won’t allow him to continue-his spirit is unbreakable-hope he’s back soon-GO Champion !!! #classact all the way,” Navratilova tweeted. Playing and winning two best-of-five-set matches with this type of injury would have been too difficult for Nadal and so he decided to retire.
Also, Nadal did not want to risk further aggravating his injury and being out for a couple of months. “I can not imagine winning two matches and out of respect for myself I somehow do not want to go out there and not be competitive enough,” Nadal said.
“A couple of weeks ago I saw my career very differently because of the foot injury. The most important thing is happiness more than any title. I can not risk that match and stay two or three months out of the competition.
I am very sad and it is very hard. “Nadal was playing at Wimbledon for the first time since 2019.
Toni Nadal reflects on Rafa
Rafael Nadal’s uncle Toni Nadal has said that his nephew cannot think of giving up in difficult moments because he is not used to it.
“The reality of my nephew, indeed, has been the one that I reminded my brother once when he told me that we rushed too many times:” If it hadn’t been like that, Rafael would have lifted half of the Grand Slams he has ”.
He, of course, will not put his health at risk, as he has stated lately, but the fact is that he combines a set of characteristics that allow him to make the most of his worst circumstances, “Toni Nadal said. Toni stated that the withdrawal from Wimbledon will help his nephew recover for the US Open.
“This time it could not be and finally, what for everyone was very predictable has happened. Playing the semifinal of a Grand Slam with a rupture in the abdominal area is an impossible task. Rafael decided yesterday afternoon to withdraw from the tournament, but I think he made it clear, once again, his intention not to leave until he sees all the possibilities exhausted and to maintain his iron commitment, the one that will encourage him to recover and face with enthusiasm the US Open. ”
