Mainz vs. Borussia Dortmund – Football Match Report – 25 January 2023

Borussia Dortmund substitute Gio Reyna scored a stoppage-time goal to give his side a 2-1 win at Mainz 05 on Wednesday and lift them back into third place in the Bundesliga.

The US men’s national team midfielder has now scored the winning goal in both Dortmund games since the Bundesliga season resumed after the World Cup. Reyna’s strike also gave Dortmund a 4-3 win over Augsburg on Sunday.

After a lackluster performance, Dortmund looked headed for a 1-1 draw before Sebastien Haller headed in their first corner of the second half and Reyna slotted it in at the far post.

The visitors, who have conceded eight goals in their last three league games, quickly fell behind when an unmarked Lee Jae-sung headed a corner at the near post in the second minute.

New Dortmund signing Julian Ryerson equalized two minutes later with a powerfully deflected shot from outside the box, but there was little else to come from Dortmund in attack.

They had a couple of efforts on goal by Karim Adeyemi in the second half, but never really threatened and ended up surviving late pressure from Mainz, who had their best chance when Anton Stach’s low drive flew just wide in the 88th.

Reyna then stepped up to give his side three points and lift Dortmund, who face Chelsea in the Champions League round of 16 next month, up to third on 31 points, five behind Bayern Munich.
