Chelsea hopeful of signing Nathan Ake from Manchester City

Chelsea are pushing hard to complete the signing of Nathan Ake from Manchester City within the next week.

The Athletic revealed today that the club are closing in on a deal for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly but they aim to recruit up to two more center-backs in the window and Ake, 27, is one of them.

Chelsea have been in discussions with Manchester City for a while, but the focus was always on concluding negotiations with them for Raheem Sterling first.

A fee of £ 47.5 million was agreed last week and he is flying out to LA today to join the club’s pre-season tour.

It is believed discussions are now stepping up over Ake’s transfer with the Holland international expected to cost around £ 45 million. Sources suggest talks are progressing over the fee and structure of the deal. Personal terms aren’t an issue.

The club also maintains an interest in Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Paris Saint-Germain’s Presnel Kimpembe. There is a need to strengthen at the back after losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen when their contracts expired.

Rudiger eventually signed for Real Madrid while Christensen moved to their rivals Barcelona.

Ake knows Chelsea very well having joined their academy from Feyenoord in 2012 and spent five years there. He made only 17 appearances for the first team and was loaned out to Reading, Watford and Bournemouth, moving to the latter for £ 20 million in 2017.

Chelsea had an option in that deal to buy him back for £ 40 million but decided against it. He went to Manchester City instead two years ago for £ 41 million and was part of the squad which won the Premier League in 2021 and 2022.

Coach Thomas Tuchel is thought to be an admirer of the 27-year-old, partly because he can play in a variety of positions and should be able to settle quickly if he completes a return to Stamford Bridge.
