San Diego at Pepperdine Analysis

The Pepperdine Waves will look to bounce back Monday night when they host the San Diego Toreros in West Coast Conference action set to tip at 10:00 EST at the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, California. The Waves were mauled by No .4 Gonzaga 117-83 and failed to cover the spread as 30-point road underdogs. For Gonzaga, who was playing their first game in more than three weeks due to the COVID-19 health and safety protocols, Anton Watson scored 19 points, Drew Timme and Chet Holmgren scored 18 each. The win extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 60 games.

While Defense Struggles, Waves Play Better at Home

In the loss to Gonzaga, the Waves allowed a season-high 54.2% shooting and marked the fourth game this season in which they allowed an opponent to shoot higher than 50% from the field. However, the silver lining is that the Waves are 3-0 against the spread this season following a poor defensive game in which they allowed 50% or higher shooting.

The Waves have played their best basketball at home and are 6-2 straight up, 5-1 against the spread, with the under going 4-2. The Toreros are 2-4 straight up on the road and 1-4 as an underdog.

Pepperdine Offense is Heating Up

The Waves have had a far more difficult schedule that the Toreros to date and despite having a 6-10 straight-up record the market is correct in making them a 3-point home favorite in this matchup. The offense has been much better over their most recent games. For the season they rank 221st averaging 70.4 points per game (PPG) despite ranking 61st averaging 62 field goals attempted per game. These two offensive measures combine for a very poor 281st ranking with a 42.1% field goal percentage.

However, over their last five games, the Waves are averaging 80 points per game, 39 first half points per game, and shooting 45% from the field. The improved offense will carry over tonight against the Toreros, who are allowing 45% shooting in road games this season.

Reasons to Ride the Waves

The Waves are a better than average free throw shooting team ranking 34th nationally and making 76.4% of those shot attempts at the charity stripe. The Toreros are a money-burning 6- 16 against the spread when facing a solid shooting free throw team that makes at least 72% of those shots in games played over the last three seasons. The Toreros rank 337 of the 257 Division-1 basketball programs in the nation averaging just 4.8 steals per game. They are 0-6 against the spread following a game in which they had no more than two steals in games played over the last three seasons.

The Waves are 9-2 against the spread after scoring 75 or more points in back-to-back games in games played over the last two seasons. Plus, near-perfect 9-1 against the spread following a game in which they allowed 80 or more points over the last two seasons.

Toreros Try to Keep Up

The Toreros are coming off a 15-point 88-73 road loss to the San Francisco Dons but did cover the spread as 17.5-point underdogs. On the season, the Toreros are 7-7 straight up, 5-7 against the spread, and the under is 7-5. They are 3-2 straight up over their last five games and have posted an even 2-2 against the spread record with one game against California Lutheran, which was not lined up.
