Nebraska football’s close-game struggles under Scott Frost highlighted by eye-opening stat

Nebraska football is 15-29 overall and 10-25 against Big Ten play since the Huskers hired head coach Scott Frost ahead of the 2018 season, and a telling statistic provides a closer look at how narrow the program’s gap has been between wins and losses. Chris Fallica of College GameDay shared this week on Twitter a revealing number about close games, something the team figures to emphasize even more so in 2022.

“Since 2018, Nebraska is 5-18 in games decided by 7 points or fewer and has a -20 TO margin in those games,” Fallica tweeted. “0-7 last year with (a) -8 TO margin in those games. Nebraska outgained their opponents by 26.4 YPG in those 7 games last year. ”

Frost was 19-7 as UCF’s head coach from 2016-17. He is just 6-14 in his past two seasons with Nebraska.

Josh Pate of 247Sports recently explained why Frost is a head coach facing pressure entering the 2022 college football season, underlining how close Frost has been to getting over the hump as a fifth-year program leader.

“It’s right there – everything Scott Frost needs to have a much better season than he had so far is right there, ”Pate said. “They have done, next to USC, the most work in the transfer portal than any Power Five program out there. I think the number is 16, the amount of kids they’ve taken. Their over-under win total is 7.5. They have not made a bowl yet under cost Frost. The oddsmakers feel it. The schedule is very favorable and also the portal has given them a transfusion of talent. ”

Things will look different at the most important position on the field for Nebraska come the fall. Out is Adrian Martinez at the quarterback position and in comes Texas transfer Casey Thompson, the likely starter for the Huskers’ opener Aug. 27 against Northwestern in Dublin.

“There’s a lot of learning,” Frost said after the spring game of the quarterback position. They say offenses are behind defenses usually when you’re doing new things, and quarterbacks take the worst of that. And there’s pieces of two different systems those guys are learning, not just him (Thompson). And that’s why I think at times we’ve looked like a million bucks and at other times we’ve looked a little lost. But I’ve seen good progress from that position from multiple guys. We have to make a lot more ground up in the summer. “

Nebraska featured a strong offense in 2021, averaging 447.9 yards and 27.9 points per game. The main issue for the Huskers was close games. Each of their losses was by nine points or fewer.

“We have a long way to go but I’ve seen improvements so far, not only from the wide receiver core but from the tight end room and the running backs as well,” Thompson said after the spring game.
