PLACERVILLE, Calif. — Buddy Kofoid earned his 11th victory of the USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series season with a 1.372-second victory over Cannon McIntosh in night two of the Hangtown 100 at Placerville Speedway Friday.
Kofoid is the first USAC Midget driver to earn double-digit wins since 1988 and his next victory would tie him for the fifth-highest total in a season where each of the four drivers ahead of his is competing in seasons featuring 45 races or more compared to a projected 37 events this year.
Kofoid has registered 39 career national midget feature wins with 20 of those coming in USAC competition.
Friday’s feature began with Thomas Meseraull taking the lead on the opening lap, with Bryant Wiedeman moving into the top spot after the two leaders made contact on lap four with Kofoid moving up from his fifth starting position to second after Meseraull crossed the berm on the high side.
It didn’t take long for Kofoid to move to the front of the pack, however, as he overtook his Keith Kunz Motorsports teammate on lap four. Behind him, fellow KKM drivers Ryan Timms and McIntosh took second and third place.
As the laps began to wind down, Timms began to close in on Kofoid and had a big run in turn one on lap 23, but the two KKM drivers would come together and Timms pitted resulting in a yellow with Timms restarting from at the back of the field.
As the field bunched up, there was no one for Kofoid who mastered the restarts while running the top part of the track and quickly pulled away from McIntosh. Behind them Jade Avedisian passed Thursday’s winner Tanner Carrick, but as the two ran side-by-side back to the starter’s stand, Carrick would push all the way off the track, making contact with Avedisian going into the wall and had a vicious flip going into turn one. 16-year-old Avedisian was about to climb into the car, but his night was over.
On the final restart, Kofoid retook the second lead over McIntosh and that would be their finish, with Tanner Thorson taking third, followed by Carrick and Chris Windom rounding out the top five.
“This is where I cut my teeth in sprint cars. It’s good to come home. It feels great to win at what I consider my home track. The track was more my style tonight than yesterday. I tightened up my car as I continued the race. Overall a good night and we sit in a good position for tomorrow. I owe everything to Keith Kunz and the guys who took a chance on me four years ago and now we’re chasing a second midget championship with 11 wins this year. And of course, I wouldn’t be here without Mobil 1 and Toyota.”
With the win, Kofoid stretched his championship lead over Justin Grant to 209 points with four races remaining. Kofoid holds an eight-point lead over McIntosh in the Hangtown 100 standings.
The USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget Series concludes with the 2022 Hangtown 100 at Placerville Speedway on Saturday night, with a $20,000 first prize on the line, as well as a $12,000 championship payout for the points winner of the three-day event.
