Newcastle United have reportedly opened preliminary talks to secure the signing of Barcelona forward Memphis Depay on loan this month.
The Netherlands international has fallen out of favor under Xavi at the Nou Camp, with the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Ousmane Dembele, Raphinha, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres all ahead of him in the attacking stakes.
The 28-year-old has also been unlucky with injuries during his time in Catalonia and has made just four appearances all season.
It is reported that before the arrival of Lewandowski and Raphinha, Depay would not have entertained leaving. But now, according to Football Insiderhe is open to the idea.
Atletico Madrid remain keen to seal a deal after Joao Felix was cleared to join Chelsea. Meanwhile, Depay’s former club PSV are also interested in a potential return.
It had initially looked as if a move to Inter was on the cards, but that was quickly shot down. And it now looks like Newcastle are ready to offer the former Manchester United forward an escape route.
Depay lasted just over a season at Old Trafford, scored seven goals in 53 games and was considered a flop.
To that end, he will feel like he has unfinished business if he finds himself back in the Premier League.
Howe wants to build Champions League squad
Eddie Howe is keen to strengthen his striker this month to consolidate the club’s top-four position.
Chelsea attack Christian Pulisic had appeared to be on his way to St James’ Park before picking up an injury which now opens the door for Depay.
Football Insider adding that the deal will likely be a loan until the end of the season. That would then lead to Depay being out of contract this summer, so Barca may prefer a sale for a relatively low fee.
This is where PSV may have an advantage as they look for a direct replacement for Cody Gakpo.
Either way, Depay’s time at Barcelona looks done and dusted – it just remains to be seen where he ends up.
Newcastle are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
