Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on young Spanish star Ivan Fresneda and clarified the respective interest levels of Arsenal and Newcastle.

Fresneda currently plays for Real Valladolid in La Liga and attracting interest from all over Europe. The 18-year-old made his debut last year and has continued to progress through the ranks.

The Madrid-born defender naturally plays at right-back and has featured in nine league games this season. He has started seven games and played a total of 737 minutes.

Having recently been promoted from the Segunda Division, Valladolid’s aim this season is to survive. As things stand, they are 17th in La Liga, somewhere outside the relegation zone.

Fresneda came through Real Madrid’s youth academy and was signed by Valladolid in 2020. He has impressed this season and is now a regular for Spain’s U-19s.

Romano has clarified the latest details on the defender and has provided a list of clubs interested in signing him.

The journalist explained via Caught Offside: “Arsenal, Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle have monitored Fresneda, but at the moment there is still no official bid on Valladolid’s table.

“These are the clubs in the race, the feeling is that it will take a few days to understand who will sign this super-talented right-back from 2004.”

What would be the right move?

Fresneda will probably not be short of offers, as several elite clubs from all over Europe are already interested. Borussia Dortmund have a long track record of developing youngsters and this could be a sensible move.

Juventus appear keen to rejuvenate their aging squad and have got their act together in Serie A. However, the most tempting offers could come from the Premier League.

Arsenal have the youngest squad in the Premier League and are going strong under Mikel Arteta right now. The chance to work with the Spanish manager could sway Fresneda towards the Gunners.

After missing out on Mykhailo Mudryk to Chelsea, Arsenal’s priority at the moment is likely to be adding another striker.

Ben White has performed admirably at right-back this season and the Gunners also have Takehiro Tomiyasu to cover.

When asked in the January window, Arteta told reporters in December: “We want to be active and active means we are looking to strengthen the team.

“This team still doesn’t have the luxury of not maximizing every window. We have to because it’s really important, but then we have to have the right profile. It has to be the right player to take us to the next level.

Elsewhere, Newcastle would be an interesting move for the Spanish full-back. Eddie Howe has his side competing for Europe and is keen to further improve his squad.

Kieran Trippier is Newcastle’s undisputed number one right-back, but considering he is 32 years old, they can look forward with Fresneda.
