Sage Steele had a little light-hearted criticism for Jon Rahm on Tuesday.
The “SportsCenter” anchor was drilled in the face with Rahm’s errant tee shot on the third hole at the PGA Championship last May, knocking out several teeth and leaving her bloodied.
“When I was hiding behind the tree, no teeth left in my mouth, I looked up and saw you,” Steele said with a smile when she and the Spanish golfer “met” for the first time. “And I’m like, the least he can do — because you didn’t know it hit me — the least you can do is birdie this hole, for me, and you let me down. I think you just parred.”
Rahm expressed his admiration for Steele, who showed off her new chompers throughout the segment, and offered a culpa for letting her down.
“Let me say, you’re tough as nails,” Rahm said. “Jesus Christ! I hit it hard, too—it came in with some speed. No, I don’t think I birdied it. I think I had a chance to birdie it; Yes, I certainly let you down. I didn’t take advantage of the whole week sorry i really let you down in that sense.
“I can’t believe how well you look after it, my God. I was honestly ignorant, I didn’t realize what happened until after the round – I can thank you for that too. It would have affected me for sure the rest of the round.
“I didn’t hear anything, not one complaint, nothing. And when they told me what happened, I couldn’t believe it. So I’m sorry.”
Steele, who returned to her “SportsCenter” duties three weeks after the surgery, said her life “flashed before (her) eyes” in June. However, her outlook has remained as bright as her new pearly whites.
“I will say,” she added, “I’ve got eight beautiful new teeth. I got a great grill out of it, Jon, so I think this is a win.”
