Former Hawks star Vince Carter’s Atlanta home was burglarized over the weekend while his wife and children hid in a closet, according to police records.
Officers from the Atlanta Police Department responded to a burglary call at his residence on Sunday night, Father’s Day, according to an incident report obtained by USA TODAY Sports on Wednesday.
Carter’s wife, Sondi Carter, told officers she was laying in bed with her twin sons when she heard “loud noises” coming from the front of their home.
“Ms. CARTER stated that she took her sons and hid in their bedroom closet as she heard the unknown suspects gain entry into her home,” the report says. “Ms. Carter stated she could hear the unknown suspects come upstairs and rummage through their belongings in different rooms while she hid.”

Upon arrival, an officer said she found a suspect, described as an unknown black male wearing all black clothing and a mask, running away from the home. The suspect was picked up by a black SUV that was able to evade police, the report says.
Police found over $ 16,000 worth of $ 100 bills scattered on the ground in front of their gated home, in addition to two firearms: one that belongs to Carter and one that could belong to the suspects, officers say. Carter said the cash “was just a small portion of over $ 100,000 that was missing from a brown bag he had in the master bedroom closet,” according to the incident report.
The suspects gained entry into the residence by way of a first-level window, which officers found “completely broken in.” A gate at the top of the stairs was also “broken off of its hinges” and multiple rooms were left in “disarray.” Sondi Carter turned over surveillance footage from cameras on the property to the police.
Sondi Carter is listed on the incident report, while Carter, who spoke to officers over the phone, is referred to only as “Ms. Carter’s husband.”
The Carters were not harmed during the incident.
Carter played the final two seasons of his 22-year career for the Hawks.
