The chief executive of Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo was offered to them as Manchester United desperately tried to offload the club legend ahead of his eventual release.
The 37-year-old was released from his Old Trafford contract at the end of November following a bitter end to his second spell at the club following his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.
And now Frankfurt board member Axel Hellmann has claimed United offered Ronaldo to several teams across Europe as they looked to offload the big Portuguese.
He told DAZN: “He was even offered to us.”
Meanwhile, Philip Holzer, chairman of the club’s board, added: “I have the feeling that he was offered to all the Champions League clubs.”
Ronaldo was public in his desire to leave United after they failed to qualify for the Champions League. However, there were no takers last summer, leaving the former Real Madrid star to stay and fight for his place at Old Trafford.
However, he completely fell out of favor with Erik ten Hag, culminating in his interview with Morgan and ultimately leading to his United demise
Ronaldo was also dropped by outgoing Portugal boss Fernando Santos for his reaction to being substituted at the World Cup.
He is currently training with his old club Real as he looks set to join another club.
Big money Ronaldo is close to being announced
And although offers are still in short supply, Saudi giants Al Nassr looks set to announce Ronaldo’s signing before the end of the year.
As for United, they were back in action on Wednesday night and cruised into the Carabao Cup quarter-finals with a 2-0 win over Burnley.
Marcus Rashford continued his fine form this season with a stunning solo strike, but Ten Hag are still expected to try to bring in another in the January window.
The Red Devils continue to be linked with the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Joao Felix, Dusan Vlahovic and Marcus Thuram.
However, it looks like the latter could be tempted by a move to Newcastle judging by Thursday’s Transfer Gossip.
United are back in action on December 27 when they host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
