Putting David Fincher in charge of a TV series about studying the minds of serial killers just seems like a natural fit, so it was no surprise when Mindhunter emerged as one of the best series that Netflix had to offer. However, after season two premiered on the platform, fans have been left hanging, wondering when Mindhunter Season 3 might become a reality. Apparently, the possibility is closer than we might think.
Rumors indicate that Mindhunter Season 3 could be coming soon, with David Fincher and Netflix talking about terms. The rumors also indicate that Fincher was always planning on having five seasons of Mindhunter, but that the show became a lot of work for the director. Fincher has also indicated in interviews the problems with the show’s budget compared to the actual viewership of the show. While that makes sense, especially since Netflix is not shy about canceling shows that do not bring in the viewers they want, they at least have to be happy about their relationship with Fincher and the critical acclaim Mindhunter has brought them. Both seasons of Mindhunter have well over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critic consensus. It’s hard to argue with making more seasons when the seasons are that good.
Of course, before Netflix and David Fincher make Mindhunter Season 3they’ll likely want to release their next upcoming collaboration, The Killer. The Killer will be the latest film from Fincher about an assassin that begins to develop a conscience while also psychologically falling apart. The film is based on the graphic novel by Alex Nolent with a screenplay by Andre Kevin Walker. The Killer stars Michael Fassbender, Tilda Swinton, Kellan Rhude, Monika Gossman, Lacey Dover, and more.
Mindhunter Season 3 would be the perfect continuation of the long and so far successful relationship between Netflix and Fincher. Netflix recently released new episodes of the animated anthology Love, Death, & Robots which Fincher executive produces on. The show won them a couple of Emmys in 2019, to add to their previous Emmy wins and nominations from their first TV collaboration, House of Cards. House of Cards was a huge hit as well, which lost viewership after the controversies surrounding the main star Kevin Spacey. Their most recent success was their film collaboration Mank which netted Fincher his third Best Director Oscar nomination.
Undoubtedly, if Netflix wants to keep the Fincher train going, they’re probably going to be more than happy to distribute whatever project he wants to work on next. So, if Fincher is ready for Mindhunter Season 3, it would not be surprising if Netflix was ready to back him. While we have not seen new episodes of Mindhunter since 2019, there have certainly been longer hiatuses to keep fans waiting. For what it’s worth, the stars of the series have also expressed their interest in returning and completing the story. Meaning Jonathan Groff, Holt McCallany, and Anna Torv would all be back for more and to study some of the most infamous serial killers of our time.
